The Perfect Couple

It was meant to be the perfect year abroad.

Rob assures me that it will be an adventure for us: a year in England living in a gothic mansion. He has a new job, and as his wife, I’ll support him. It will be good for our marriage.

But as soon as we arrive at the house it starts. The noises. The voices.

Why can no one else hear anything?

The boy.

Why can no one see him?

And now Rob is acting strangely. Distant. Dismissive. He tells me it’s all in my head. But I can hear the bells in the woods. I can see the boy…

I feel myself unravelling. There is a secret here, that everyone knows. Everyone but me.

This trip of a lifetime is turning into a perfect nightmare.

“This was so fast paced and totally creepy that I just couldn’t put it down – I read this over the course of one day and then felt a bit bereft to be honest – not that I needed more story… Just that it had been such a great read!”

“The Perfect Couple (hint: they aren’t) is almost impossible to put down. Part mystery, part horror and totally thrilling, it draws you in from the first pages. Jacey is a sympathetic character, baffled by English customs and dialect, as she tries to understand what is happening to the house and to her marriage. Jane McLoughlin builds suspense slowly to a conclusion that is totally unexpected. 5 stars.”

“What a ride this gothic thriller was! Sooooo very creepy and intriguing. No spoilers but I didn’t see that end coming up at all.”

Reader Review

“This book gripped me from the start. Everything from the title. The Perfect Couple: clearly destined for a fall. The couple: arrogant, attractive, wanna-be writer and lecturer Rob, and his awestruck and fragile wife Jacey. The setting: creepy old house in a backwater of Sussex they’ve been transferred to for Rob’s work. The author Jane McLoughlin creates the perfect set up. And then the performance begins… I recommend for readers who like psychological thrillers with a supernatural flavour.”
